If you've found kittens

This is one of the messages we get most, and we understand the instinct to scoop kittens up right away, but finding a litter outdoors without an adult cat nearby doesn't mean they've been abandoned.

In most cases, mom is close by and will be back soon. Kittens' best chance of survival is staying with her, since very young kittens need round-the-clock care that most shelters — and most well-meaning rescuers — aren't equipped to provide.

Keep a respectful distance and watch for real signs of danger or distress before stepping in.

Once the kittens are around 8 weeks old, the whole family should be spayed or neutered and vaccinated.
